Dangerous animals in Australia: should you really worry?

It is the joke almost every traveller hears. In reality, Tourism Australia says you are unlikely to encounter a dangerous animal in everyday life, and most wildlife avoids people.

What you are likely to see

Concerning encounters are rare in cities and hostels. On farms, in the bush and in tropical northern areas, stay aware and follow local instructions.

  • Do not touch or feed wildlife
  • Shake out shoes left outside
  • Stay on marked paths
  • Keep your distance

Ocean, snakes and tropical season

Swim at patrolled beaches between the flags. In northern Australia, dangerous marine stinger season is generally November to May: obey signs and use protected areas. A snake bite is an emergency: stay still, call 000 and do not try to catch the snake.

  • Obey crocodile and stinger signs
  • Never handle snakes
  • Call 000 for serious emergencies
  • Ask rangers or locals

Why we feel reassured

We worked with animals and lived in rural areas without spending every day avoiding dangerous creatures. Sun, roads and the ocean often deserve more attention than spiders.
