Understand the real plan

Talk about why Australia, the available budget, first city, work preferences and room to change direction. A working holiday is also an exercise in independence.

  • Review subclass 417 rules together
  • Set a starting budget and emergency reserve
  • Book the first nights
  • Expect the plan to evolve

Simple pre-departure checks

Keep copies of the visa grant, passport, insurance and flight. Record the first address, an emergency contact and Australia’s emergency number, 000.

  • Valid documents
  • Suitable insurance
  • Backup payment method
  • Protected digital copies
  • First-night route and address

Stay in touch without tracking every step

Agree on a realistic rhythm, such as an arrival message and a weekly call. The time difference varies by city and season, so a regular slot helps.

Housing and work habits

Avoid large payments before properly checking accommodation. Visa holders still have workplace rights, including legal pay and payslips. Never hand over the original passport to an employer or landlord.

  • Compare listings
  • Get conditions in writing
  • Keep payment and payslip records
  • Leave suspicious situations

Talk to young travellers currently there

From 15 September 2026, we will be back in Australia. Parents can message us on WhatsApp to discuss everyday life, safety, housing, jobs or a specific concern with young people on the ground.
